Opinion: Nationalizing elections is a solution in search of a problem

As a veteran and former elected official, I have watched with growing concern as our leaders in Washington vow to “nationalize” our election system. The recent State of the Union address only turned up the temperature on this misguided pressure campaign.
Proposals to bring our locally administered election processes under the thumb of federal bureaucrats are born from the flawed premise that our current system is fundamentally broken. Pennsylvania has proven time and time again that is not the case.
Our state has administered some of the most scrutinized elections in modern American history. The result? Recounts, audits, and court reviews that consistently affirm the accuracy of the vote. That should not surprise anyone familiar with the protections we already have in place.
